Why insulin is injected and not taken in tablet form/orally?
You must have heard people saying I am taking insulin injections, ever wondered why insulin is given through injections and not in a tablet form!!
and wanted to know why? If yes here's the answer
First, let us understand what is insulin and what is it's role in our body?
Insulin is a peptide(proteinaceous) hormone, produced by pancreas.
• After meal carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and enters the bloodstream resulting in increase blood sugar level this triggers pancreas to secrete insulin and it regulates blood sugar level by entering into blood.
if this mechanism functions properly blood sugar stays in healthy range and if it not it results into disease named DIABETES.
Types of diabetes :
1. Type 1 - when pancreas does not produce insulin.
2. Type 2 - Body not responding to insulin properly (receptors damage)
Now comes the question of the day!
why insulin is injected and not taken orally?
There are two main reasons
1.Digestion destroys insulin - As mentioned earlier insulin is a peptide hormone so before it reaches to bloodstream it will degraded by digestive enzymes
2. Poor absorption - even if it gets saved from these enzymes during digestion being a largemolecule it will not get absorbed easily by intestine.
Therefore to ensure insulin reaches bloodstream directly it is given as injections!
• Safe insulin injection practices~
